The kid and the starfish

Let me tell you a story....

As an old bloke walked the beach at dawn he noticed a kid ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the young guy, he asked him why he was doing it. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.

"But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish," counted the old man. "How can your efforts make any difference?"

The kid looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to the safety of the waves. " It will make a difference to THIS ONE," he said.

In the pursuit of a far-fetched dream, we are sometimes discouraged by negative thoughts and hence, more often than not, give up before we even try to do anything. But we tend to overlook that every step we take brings us this much closer to realizing our aspirations. So no matter how daunting the task seems, we must FIGHT ON even when desirable results are not as apparent as they should be.

This goes out to those taking their exams. All the best guys and gals:)

A night (with so many names) to remember

I have just returned from a get together barbecue kindly organised by Wei Fen, Chong, Ah man, Joey (the girl one) and Pei Xuan. It was very fun to see some old friends again and always a joy to make new ones. There were amazingly many Japanese people there and I kinna got to know quite a few of them. I'll try to recall some names so that I wont forget. Alright, there was Mia, Justina, Fei, Sirus, Bryan, Chong Soon, Jun, Sam, Joey (the guy one), Jonna, and a hell lot more that I simply cannot remember. And of course not forgetting the usuals, apart from the host that is, Xiao Hui, Christine, Ricky, Andy and Douglas.

The smell of barbecued food still lingers in the air.

Gomen kudasai

I was just looking at some old blog post of a fren and remembered that I didnt treat that person as well as I should for a period of time due to my poor judgement. I was mistaken and I have misjudged you. Gomen ne. I hope you are well.

Copycat!

I have recently completed a biology report on cell energetics and was told most explicitly to cite my references else risking my degree. You see, plagiarism is taken very seriously in my uni and you will get into serious trouble if you take the ideas of others and passed it on as if they were your own. (definition of plagiarism was taken from www.dictionary.com ) I guess it is easy to understand why they have to go through so much trouble to cause misery to the lives of the undergrads by insisting ANY and EVERY reference to be included. You will understand, really, once YOUR ideas are 'stolen' by others.

I am not wealthy with great ideas and they aren't quite as valuable even if I had any but I must admit that I do feel a sense of injustice when I see that my ideas are being passed on without proper acknowledgement. The worst part of all was that the idea was not fully conveyed in the correct way. It was so painful to read sections of what that was originally mine, intertwined with some... (I cant find a word to describe without being offensive)

Please be original. If you need to copy, please take the whole thing or risk making a fool of yourself.

When do we stop?

We are so blessed. There is food on the table so that we wont starve. We have clothes to put on so that we will be warm. Sanitized water runs from our taps so that we wont be thirsty. We have lights at home so that we can see in the night. We have a comfortable bed to sleep in at night. We have hot water for our bathes. We have shoes to wear so that our feet dont hurt when we walk outside. We are so blessed. But we are not content. How much more? When will we stop wanting?

To be or not to be

One of the most difficult choice to make in life is the one which does not allow you to turn back once your decision is made. Especially if the decision which you are about to make involves the lives of others as much as it does your own.

I am inclined to think that many would depend on some external help, when faced with such a situation, before they are able to reach a final decision. Some might, well, flip a coin or something while others might consult the wisdom of a friend or family. Some talk it through, weigh the pros and cons of each side and take the one they deemed will be to their best advantage. A handful might turn to their religon, seek the answer from a higher being with whom they trust their fates upon. What about you?

What if one day you're faced with a decision that might change your life and the lives that revolves around yours? Would you take the plunge?

Let the count down begin

The week that has past (almost) was THE MOST hectic week I have had by far. I am just glad that it's over. But just before the angels start to sing, the school have to inform us of our exam timetable today. And so the count down to exams has started and I am slightly more than a month away from my first paper. How exciting!

The gates of hell open its doors on the 21st of June with the word "BIOLOGY" written at the top of it. MATHS and PHYSICS have decided to huant me on the same day to ensure my extinction by the 23rd of June. And just in case I survived, CHEMISTRY will suck the last sign of life out of me on the 25th of June. There, I am done (for)

Busy busy busy. No time to talk. Bye!

Once bitten twice shy

Everything is going up.

I need to breathe.

I was quite pissed today. Very, in fact. Not at anyone but myself. I cannot believe I actually sit around and allow it to happen. It will not happen again. I swear.

Life is such a tiresome thing

What do you live for? Do you live to eat, or eat to live? Do you live for love, or to be loved? You have your reason and I have mine. I live for another. Many others in fact. I live for my family because if I die they will be devastated. I live for my friends because they live for me too. (I will not let them die, in any sense of the word) Dont die on me lyj. (I have used your initials so that only the group of us knows) And if you dont know, its a sign that you do not need to know.

'But are you happy?' she asked me.

'I dont know' I replied.

And then I realised that, for all the reasons to live I have left out one most important thing. Myself! So that's why I am tired of pleasing everyone! Because I forget about pleasing me. Please yourself today. Buy yourself that branded bag you have always wanted. Better still, go on a holiday! Reward yourself for surviving yet another day on earth where hypocrisy, lies, betrayal, backstabbing and war dominates. And above all that, reward yourself by indulging in the thought of that particular someone whose heart ache at the sight of your tears. And then smile and be happy and contented.

Tell me why I'm wrong

If you think its bad to make mistakes, then its much worse not knowing how to correct them. I seriously do not think that I am wrong.

Officially hate maths!

Accuracy VS precision

I am blessed with a friend who likes to play ball games! She likes basketball though which is not something I would fancy playing for I am less than good in that game but I agreed to play with her nonetheless. I must admit we looked quite dumb trying to get that ball into the net as we hardly ever made it go in and was surprise at the amount of attention we got from the people around.

Of late, I have been confronted by my assignments across courses for the difference in the meaning of accuracy and precision. For those who took baics physics or some chemistry, you would naturally think that precision is the ability to produce the same result over and over again while accuracy is the measure of how near your results are from the true value. Using this theory, I think its safe to say that my basketball shots was very precise. I was able to reproduce the SAME result no matter where I stood (the ball went everywhere but into the net). It was quite frustrating I must say but practice makes perfect, hopefully.

I wish to get better. We'll probably play again soon next week:)
